Happy Pi Day! Today is also the UNESCO International Day of Mathematics! Why is today Pi day? If you live outside of the US, this is a very valid question. March 14 is written as 3/14 in the US date convention. But why does Pi get the honor of being the mascot of the International Day of Mathematics? There are a multitude of important mathematical constants, so what makes Pi special? One could argue in favor of dedicating a day to the Euler constant or the Golden Ratio. However, to the non-mathematical community, Pi is certainly the most familiar mathematical constant- one that many have been exposed to since their middle school days. So Pi it is.
In honor of Pi day, I ask you all to email me your most creative methods of deriving Pi.
